A tribunal set up by the government confirmed on Thursday the high profile rape of Dr Shazia but failed to identify any suspects. The tribunal confirmed that 32-year-old Shazia Khalid was raped twice by an individual, but dismissed accusations from tribal elders that a certain army officer had been involved. The January 2 rape of Dr Shazia in her lodgings near Sui gas field spiked a surge of violence in the area. Tribal elders claimed an unnamed army officer was involved in the rape and demanded his immediate arrest.
President Musharraf last month said the rapist deserved to be hanged but said no army officer was guilty of the rape.
The judicial tribunal, headed by the Balochistan High Court Judge Ahmad Khan Lashari, in its report on Thursday said witness statements did not prove the involvement of army personnel in the rape.
Balochistan police said on Thursday the investigation of the case would continue until the arrest of the rapist. Officials told AFP in Karachi that Dr Shazia had been barred from leaving the country pending investigations into the case.
Shazia last month said she was determined to leave the country.
