IRSA to reconsider water-share between provinces on Friday

terbelasISLAMABAD: The Advisory Committee of water regulatory body, Indus River System Authority (IRSA) will meet here Friday to review water availability and its allocation to the provinces for Rabi season 2011- 12.

IRSA Spokesman Khalid Idress told APP here that around 10 per cent shortfall of water was estimated by IRSA technical committee for the upcoming Rabi season from October 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012.

The committee was informed that accumulated 34.5 MAF water would be available for Rabi season, however there would be 10 per cent water shortage for Punjab and Sindh provinces.

IRSA chairman Rao Irshad Ali Khan would chair the meeting while irrigation and agriculture secretaries of the provinces, officials of WAPDA, Federal Flood Commission besides authority members would also participate.

According to initial estimation about the water inflows, 21.7 MAF water inflows is expected in the system, while 11.9 MAF storage water would be available in the major reservoirs of the country including Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma till the end of the ongoing month September, as 34.5 MAF water would be available for irrigation of the upcoming Rabi crops.

Meanwhile, the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) on Thursday released 157,278 cusecs water from various rim stations with inflow of 118,524 cusecs.

According to the data released by IRSA, the maximum water level in River Indus at Tarbela was 1547.92 feet which was 169.92 feet higher than its dead level of 1378 feet.

Water inflow in the dam was recorded as 61,500 cusecs while out flow was recorded as 92,000 cusecs.

The water level in River Jhelum at Mangla was 1209.70 feet which was 169.70 feet higher than its dead level of 1040 feet whereas the inflow and outflow of water was recorded as 20,746 and 29,000 cusecs respectively.

The release of water at Kalabagh, Taunsa and Sukkur was recorded as 110,028, 70,863 and 131,725 cusecs respectively.

Similarly, from River Kabul a total of 10,400 cusecs of water was released at Nowshera and 25,878 cusecs released from River Chenab at Marala.
