imageISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has increased number of freight trains ex-port to up-country from one (01) train per day in year 2011-12 to 12 trains in year 2014-15 which resulted in its financial health improvement.

The department is also focusing on freight sector and has inducted rehabilitated and new locomotives in freight pool, official sources in the Ministry of Railways told APP.

They said the steps taken by present government are showing good results as fiscal deficit of Pakistan Railway for fiscal year 2014-2015 stands at Rs. 27.247 billion as compared to Rs. 32.527 billion during 2013-14.

A data regarding targets set and earnings achieved during last four years showed that during 2011-12 the target was Rs. 3,987.913 million but the department achieved earnings of Rs. 1,537.547 million while during year 2012-13 the target was Rs. 2,500 million and earnings achieved was Rs. 1,673.661 million, they added.

Similarly, against the target of Rs. 2,000 million during year 2013-14 the department achieved earnings of Rs. 3,508.411 million and during 2014-15 the target was Rs. 6,300 million and earnings of Rs. 8,346.22 million were achieved.

The sources while listing the other measures said punctuality of passenger trains has been improved tremendously as the punctuality in the year 2012 was 10 percent which increased to 47 percent in 2012-13, 52 percent in 2013-14 and 65 percent in 2014-15. Now the punctuality is 72 percent.

Moreover, they said improvement of infrastructure has also been prioritized with doubling of track between Lahore-Karachi, they added.

Train operations have been rationalized as a result operating ratio which in the year 2011-12 was 203.59 has been decreased to 132 in the year 2014-15, the sources said.

A project of special repairs of 100 locomotives has been initiated in 2015, procurement process has been started and the project would be completed by 2016-17.

They said that expenditures have been controlled through computerization of payments of pensions, as such risk of Ghost Pensioners and any over payment has been eliminated.
