Facebook, the world largest social media platform introduced a number of features at it F8 developer’s conference. One of the most eye-catching one was the introduction of Account Kit.
Account Kit is FB’s latest mode for app developers to allow users sign up for services with an email or phone number, without the need of username or password, as per Mashable. The idea behind Account Kit is to reduce the friction it takes to sign up for an account within an app.
According to The Verge, the good old Facebook logins are still a preferred source to developers, as they provide much richer data, helpful for both advertising and growth purposes. However, in order to test Account Kit FB partnered with Indian music app ‘Saavn’, and in just two months the app received more than 500,000 sign-ups through just phone numbers.
"People tell us that they hate passwords," says Eddie O'Neil, a product manager at Facebook.
Now, how does it work, a move seen to expand the "log in with Facebook" button. Apps that allow logins with Accounts ask you for your phone number. Once you provide your digits, Facebook sends you a code to confirm the number belongs to you. Lastly, enter the code and you're now logged into the app, with no password to remember.
