FM Khar stresses enhanced economic cooperation with Japan

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister of Pakistan Hina Rabbani Khar met her Japanese counterpart Koichiro Gemba on the sidelines of the 66th session of the General Assembly in New York and discussed the existing economic cooperation between the two countries.

According to a press release received here from New York, Foreign Minister Khar briefed his Japanese counterpart on counter-terrorism efforts and on the evolving security situation in the region including Afghanistan.

She expressed Pakistan's strong commitment to the stability and security of Afghanistan. Both leaders strongly condemned the assassination of Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani yesterday.

Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba expressed sympathy for the affected people of recent floods in Pakistan. He informed that the Japanese government had decided to provide $10 million emergency grant aid for flood relief in addition to its earlier aid.

Foreign Minister Khar also felicitated Gemba on his well-deserved elevation to the august office.

Japanese development projects in Pakistan in social sectors like education and health and the promotion of investment in Pakistan by the Japanese companies also figured the discussions.

Both sides agreed to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Japan in a befitting manner by enhancing interactions in cultural field and by focusing on trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
