US stocks mixed on economic worries
NEW YORK: US stocks were mixed on Thursday, gaining back some ground after a series of gloomy economic reports from the United States and China led to steep initial losses.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 59.52 points (0.49 percent) to a level of 12,050.15 in closing trade.
The broader S&P 500 fell 3.59 points (0.28 percent) to 1,283.55, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 17.56 points (0.66 percent) to 2,686.75.
Earlier in the day, all three major stock market indices were down more than one percent after a pair of reports on the US housing market and the Chinese manufacturing sector suggested that global growth was slowing.
