LAHORE: Pakistan Railways General Manager Anjum Pervaiz has said performance of new chinese locomotives is up to mark but it will take some time for drivers and other staff to be familiar with them.
Addressing a press conference at PR Headquarters here on Friday, he said medium RPM engines were already working in the PR but new ones were High RPM locomotives which were more efficient and their fuel consumption was better than the others.
He said the previous PR management was not taken into confidence regarding the order by the ministry of the previous government, however, all relevant engineers had been taken on board after the present government had taken over the charge.
He said the order was given after removing all concerns of the PR engineers by representatives of companies, including Caterpillar (USA), Wabtec (USA), Westinghouse (USA) and Yongji (China).
He said import of all 58 locomotives had been staggered and now these engines were coming in small consignments, adding an exclusive engine shed was made for locomotives as their technology was latest.
He said the PR administration was monitoring operation of locomotives so that their maintenance could be made up to date.
The GM said instructors, engineers, technicians and a computer operator were sent for training to China so that issues during operation could be tackled properly, adding about 150 drivers had been trained here.
He said an Event Recorder like a black box was also installed in locomotives which would record its movements and issues.
He said the PR had to face some problems when AG 30 locomotives of General Electric were imported as they were semi automatic and 28 modifications were made by the PR engineers in them even that these locomotives were very good in performance.
Anjum requested the media not to highlight minor issues, adding that locomotives had to face minor technical issue just three times out of 103 trips.
He said all parts of Chinese locomotives were under warranty for 36 to 60 months.
He rejected the perception that these locomotives had any issue in passing through tunnels.
Additional General Manager Traffic Javaid Anwar Boobak and Chief Mechanical Engineer (locomotives) Tariq Khan.
