One third of the world's population is currently infected with the TB, said health experts in a seminar held at the Department of Chest Medicine, King Edward Medical University (KEMU) here on Thursday on World TB Day.
KEMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Asad Aslam Khan was the chief guest and Mayo Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Zahid Pervaiz was the guest of honour.
Addressing the seminar, Dr Asad Aslam said that Tuberculosis was a contagious disease. Like the common cold, it spreads through the air. Only people who are afflicted with TB in their lungs are infectious.
"When someone immune system is weakened, the chances of becoming sick are greater" he added.
Dr Zahid Pervez said that disease of TB could affect any part of the human body but in majority of the cases the disease affects the lungs of the patient.
He said that the patients should use preventive measures to avoid spread of the disease, adding that the mother who is patient of TB could feed her child without any fear of affecting of infant by the disease, he advised.
He said that the data of the patients of TB have been computerized so that they could not face any difficulty during the treatment.
He advised the parents to complete the preventive course of immunization to their infants so that they could be protected from the diseases and could be brought up in a healthier atmosphere.
Dr Khalid Chaudhry presented welcome address and number of other renowned chest physicians also delivered lectures for proper diagnosis, management and control of Tuberculosis on this occasion.
