  • The meeting has been convened on US Congressman Brad Sherman's request.
  • Sherman had also urged Alice Wells to persuade India to allow US diplomats to visit Indian-occupied Kashmir.

US Congressman Brad Sherman, who heads a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, has announced that top officials of state department and intelligence will brief the members of US House Subcommittee on Asia regarding Kashmir on December 12.

The Democratic congressman of California took to his official Twitter handle on Wednesday and announced that the briefing has been arranged on his request. "As Chair of the House Asia Subcommittee, I arranged a classified briefing. Tomorrow, top State Department and Intel officials will brief members of the Subcommittee and other interested members on Kashmir," Sherman tweeted.

Last month, Sherman wrote a letter to Assistant Secretary Alice Wells, who heads the State Department’s Bureau for South and Central Asian Affairs, and urged her to expedite efforts for sending US diplomats to Kashmir. "One reason I am so concerned about the situation in Kashmir is because there is a lack of reliable information coming from the region,” he wrote in his letter.

Indian-occupied Kashmir has been under lock-down since August 5 when the Indian government revoked the special status granted to the region.
