ISLAMABAD: PML-N President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Friday announced to distribute 300,000 laptops among the talented students of Punjab during next financial year.
Addressing a youth convention in which laptops were distributed among the students of four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir at Jinnah Convention Center here, he rejected criticism on the laptop distribution scheme and said Rs 11 billion would be allocated in the next budget of Punjab province for the purpose.
"We want to bring change through education and promotion of merit culture in the country," he added. He said that the teachers and doctors were given employment purely on merit in Punjab and vowed to uphold the merit policy in future.
Nawaz Sharif said that his party with the support of the youth would pull the country out of crises. He claimed that mega development projects, including airports of Karachi, Ghazi-Barotha power project, Chashma nuclear plant, coastal highway and Gwadar seaport were started and completed during his tenure.
The PML-N President asserted that had his party not overthrown in 1997, Pakistan would have been financially sound. Earlier, students presented a cultural show and depicted the cultural colours of the four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
A smartly turned out contingent of Punjab police presented guard of honour to the students sitting in the galleries and main hall.
Party leaders, members of parliament, workers, parents and a large number of students of various universities attended the convention.
