Speaking in the National Assembly on the day when a federal minister was gunned down in the Capital, Gilani said that terrorism and extremism were bringing bad name to Islam.

Condemning the assassination of Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti, the Prime Minister proposed to convene a meeting of heads of parliamentary committees to discuss the issue. The Premier also proposed to call a meeting of the Defence Committee of the Cabinet involving civil and military bureaucracy to adopt effective measures to curb such incidents.

Earlier, Gilani eulogised the services of Shahbaz Bhatti for interfaith harmony and recalled different occasions where he (PM) and Bhatti worked together for religious fraternity.

Expressing sympathy with the bereaved family, he assured that the perpetrators of this act would be brought to justice. The Prime Minister said that he rushed to the hospital as soon as he learnt about the assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti.

He said that the meeting of Cabinet Committee, where coalition partners were also present, had condemned the assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti.
