ISLAMABAD: Chief of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Mian Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday demanded that early general elections be announced to overcome crises.
"Pakistan is facing challenges and to face them effectively we need to have a confidence of the masses. Corruption and other problems are on the rise. So there should be early elections which will be a right decision in the prevailing circumstances," he said while addressing a press conference.
Nawaz Sharif alongwith Anwar Baig, who joined PML (N), said uncovering of new corruption scandals was "alarming" and strict measures were required to combat this menace.
He said corrupt people were filling their pockets with hard-earned money of the people which was unfair and at the same time they were defaming the democracy as well as the country.
Nawaz Sharif said rampant corruption was dangerous for democracy rather "I think conspiracies are being hatched to defame democracy. Corruption should be stopped through serious and appropriate measures otherwise it will continue which is not in our interest."
Replying to a question, Nawaz Sharif said the people had had elected him Prime Minister twice and during his tenures he had tried his best to deliver for their betterment and welfare, and that of the country, but unfortunately his both tenures were toppled.
"Pakistan wants to move forward with the entire world and desires that its concern should be given due consideration. Our concerns such as violation of borders and drone attacks, should be removed," he said.
When asked to comment on the memo gate issue, he said the PML-N's stance had not changed on it.
Nawaz Sharif said he had a meeting with the US Ambassador and the British High Commissioner in Pakistan and conveyed them the concerns.
On a question regarding the situation in Gilgit-Baltistan, he said curfew was not a solution of the problem in the area rather there was a need to find out the facts which had led to such a situation. The GB government should be provided all support to achieve positive results.
The PML-N chief said his party would support the good work of the government and would continue opposing its steps, not favourable to the masses.
He said those, who had damaged the image of PML-N and played a leading role in support of the Musharraf's dictatorial regime would not be welcomed. The other politicians are always welcomed, he added.
