Safety measures urged for sanitary workers of WASA, HMC

Legislators, representatives of Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA), Social Welfare Department, Labour Department and civil society members realised to work in close coordination and design Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) for sanitary workers, who are working in hazardous environmental conditions.

They were discussing at a consultation meeting to promote social well-being of sanitary workers, held at a local hotel here. The meeting was organised by Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO) and chaired by Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) chairperson former Justice Majida Rizvi.

The speakers collectively came to the point that SOP should be made to take measures to help these people, who seem vulnerable to face health hazards, and work at risk without using safety tools. They suggested that leading departments mainly Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (HMC), WASA, Town committee Administrations (TMAs) and other institutions should work in collaboration with representatives of sanitary workers to ensure safety measures and job security of the same.

Former Justice Majida Rizvi asked participants to present documentation to the SHRC if somebody have so they may take action timely. She wanted community activists to inform the SHRC with evidence if there is any violation at the part of government and private institutions.
