NEW YORK: The major US stock indices opened flat Tuesday in cautious trading as the Federal Reserve was poised to publish its latest round of policy-meeting minutes.

"Without many market-moving headlines, many market participants are anxious for the release of minutes from the most recent FOMC meeting," said Briefing.com analysts, referring to the Federal Open Market Committee.

US factory orders data was also expected in short order.

At the open the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 16.73 points (0.13 percent) to 13,247.76 points.

The Nasdaq was up 1.84 points, or a fraction of one percent, to 3,121.54 points.

The S&P 500 was down 1.58 points (0.11 percent) to 1,417.46.
