Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has claimed that the outgoing chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq eyes to become the next head coach of the national side, citing it as the reason behind Inzamam’s decision to quit the role of chief selector.

“Inzamam intends to become the next coach of Pakistan cricket, that’s why he has resigned,” said Akhtar. The claim comes days after Inzamam announced that he would step down from his post as Pakistan cricket chief selector and would not seek a contract renewal.

Speaking about who should lead Pakistan cricket, the speedster said that Sarfaraz Ahmed should stick to wicket keeping and batting, and should relinquish the captaincy. “He should be used for his keeping and batting skills,” said Akhtar. “No way should he continue as captain of the Pakistan cricket team. He should not be the captain in any format,” he said.

Shoaib was of the view that Pakistan should pick two captains for different formats, picking up Haris Sohail for ODIs and T20Is, while Babar Azam should lead the Test side.

“Haris Sohail should be made the captain. He should captain the side in ODIs and T20Is. Whereas, they should test him [Babar Azam] in Test cricket. I wish him the best. He has scored a lot of runs,” he said.
