UK wheat and maize imports rise in May

Wheat imports for the month totalled 107,956 tonnes, up from the previous month's 69,403 tonnes.

Cumulative wheat imports for the 2018/19 season, which started on July 1, 2018, were 1.69 million tonnes, up from 1.50 million in the same period a year earlier.

Bulgaria was Britain's main wheat supplier in May shipping 30,895 tonnes.

Bulgaria was also the largest supplier in the 11-month period from July-May (279,526 tonnes), narrowly ahead of Canada (276,199) and France (275,616).

British maize imports also rose in May.

Maize imports for the month were 279,297 tonnes, up from the prior month's 220,723 tonnes.

Ukraine was the main maize supplier in May, shipping 130,040 tonnes followed by Canada (65,411).

Cumulative maize imports for the season totalled 2.64 million tonnes, up from 2.02 million tonnes in the same period a year earlier.

Ukraine was the main supplier in the 11-month period (862,426 tonnes), followed by Canada (398,675).
