The violence erupted after killing of a MQM worker Mansoor Mukhtar in PIB Colony in the morning. All businesses, shops and petrol pumps were closed and public transport went off the roads for fear of being torched.
A man was killed in Manzoor Colony, while another was gunned down in Surjani town. There were other incidents of firing in Safoora Chowrangi and other areas.
A police vehicle and a bus were also set ablaze near Liaquat National Hospital. Two buses were burnt in Liaquatabad and another on MA Jinnah Road.
Deceased Mansoor Mukhtar’s injured brother also succumbed to injuries in hospital.
Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik while talking to the media said he would personally go to Karachi to investigate the law and order situation in the city.
The interior minister was talking to the media after MQM held a sit-in outside the Parliament House in Islamabad.
Home Minister Manzoor Wasan has formed three-member committee to probe the MQM activist’s killing. Karachi University has cancelled examinations scheduled for today. New dates would be announced later. MQM has announced mourning over the killing of their party member.
