That was 1.8pc lower than a month before and 5.7pc less than a year ago.

The average number of jobless in the first half of 2019 was 5.9pc lower than it was in the same period last year, the Employment Service said.

June's jobless rate will be released in August. In April, the last data available, the jobless rate reached 7.6pc, with 73,965 people out of work.

The service said the most new jobs are available for cleaners, truck drivers and sales people.

Slovenia, which narrowly avoided an international bailout for its banks in 2013, has managed to reduce unemployment since then amid steady economic growth.

Many firms say it is increasingly difficult to find an adequate workforce.

The government's macroeconomic institute, UMAR, expects the jobless rate to continue falling in coming years, to 7pc in 2020 and 6.4pc in 2021.
