31 arrested, vegetable beds spread over 70 acres destroyed in city

Karachi Commissioner, Roshan Ali Shaikh in a briefing on Thursday said, campaign that will continue till all such beds of vegetables using toxic water for cultivation in the city, were destroyed for good.

"This campaign is inevitable as consumption of chemical laced vegetable was a serious threat to public health," said the commissioner.

The campaign is being supervised by additional deputy commissioner (ADC-East), Syed Mohamamd Ali Shah and Assistant Commissioner of Landhi and Korangi, Javed Soomro.

Karachi commissioner said that since some of the culprits resorted to violence and attempted to harm government officials and property, besides the media teams accompanying them, therefore higher authorities of Sindh Rangers and police departments were approached to despatch additional force.

Roshan Ali Shaikh said the city administration was not averse to cultivation of vegetables, however, could not allow usage of extremely hazardous and chemical tainted water for the purpose.

He said the administration is taking needed measures to bring all relevant stakeholders at a single platform and arrange for as early as possible installation of a treatment plant so that poisonous water is not discharged by the factories.
