KIEV: Ukraine's sugar union Ukrtsukor said on Thursday the country could cut its white sugar production by around a quarter to 1.3 to 1.4 million tonnes due to a smaller sowing area.

Earlier this week the union lowered its forecast for 2019 sugar beet sowing area to 205,000-210,000 hectares from the previous 230,000-280,000 hectares in 2018.

The union has said overproduction of sugar in the previous season was the main reason for the smaller sowing area. Ukraine produced around 1.8 million tonnes of sugar from sugar beet in 2018.
