Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and Bushra Zulqarnain, Member of the National Commission on Status of Women and Saeed Ahmed Alvi, Secretary of the Ministry of Human Rights also participated in the meeting.
Ms. Gilani thanked Ms. Ambrose, who is Canada's minister for status of women, for their development and humanitarian assistance to Pakistan, especially for projects in the flood-affected areas, a press release of the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations said.
Ms. Rose reaffirmed her country's desire to work closely with the Pakistani government and to support development projects aimed at empowering women. The two leaders shared their experiences and steps taken to improve the lot of women and children in their respective countries, with a particular focus on rural areas, the press release said.
Ms. Gilani enumerated details of various projects being undertaken, such as the Benazir Income Support Programme and distribution of state land to landless farmers, especially women, to improve their economic status and to enhance their decision-making role in the family and society.
She also conveyed details of recent parliamentary legislations to combat all forms of violence against women. Ms. Rose appreciated these steps. She also thanked Ms. Gilani for Pakistan's sponsorship of the Canadian initiative in the General Assembly to celebrate the International Day of Girl Child.
