In initial deals, London's benchmark FTSE 100 index of major blue-chip companies was down 0.5 percent at 6,880.78 points.

In the eurozone, Frankfurt's DAX 30 shed almost 0.6 percent to 10,823.72 points and the Paris CAC 40 lost nearly 0.9 percent to 4,740.31.
