Dean Elgar to lead Proteas against Pakistan in final Test  

South African opening bastman Dean Elgar would act as the stand-in captain, in place of the suspended regular skipper Faf du Plessis, for the third and final Test against Pakistan scheduled to start in Johannesburg on Friday.

“The appointment of Elgar as stand-in captain is part of our strategy to develop our pool of leaders,” said CSA National Selection Panel (NSP) convener Linda Zondi, quoted Cricket South Africa.

“We have previously used Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock in this role in ODI matches and Dean has previously captained the Proteas at Test match level against England at Lord’s in 2017,” added Zondi.

Earlier, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was suspended for one test and fined 20 percent of his match fee after his side were charged with a slow over rate in the nine-wicket second test victory over Pakistan at Newlands.

Du Plessis will sit out the final match of the series starting in Johannesburg on Friday after match referee David Boon imposed the suspension having found South Africa to be one over short of their required number in the test.

With the series already lost 2-0, Pakistan would take on the Proteas in the third and final Test of the series, at Johannesburg from Jan 11-15.
