The benchmark Hang Seng Index slipped 68.2 points to 21,423.42 on turnover of HK$66.99 billion ($8.64 billion). It had stood at more than 21,700 earlier in the day.
Chinese shares also pared early rises, with the Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, ending up 0.27 percent, or 6.42 points, at 2,363.60 on turnover of 82.3 billion yuan ($13.1 billion).
