Four other people, two police and two civilians, were injured in the powerful blast, local police officer Abdul Ahad told AFP.

A spokesman for the interior ministry told AFP: "there has been a suicide car bombing in Kandahar. So far, we have one police death."

Witnesses reported "an extremely powerful explosion". The Kandahar Media Office, run by the local government, also confirmed a suicide car bombing, saying the blast "completely destroyed a civilian compound."
