#StopJahezKhori: Pakistani celebs raise voice against dowry culture in Pakistan

22 Dec, 2018

Pakistani celebs have joined hands to raise voice against the dowry culture in Pakistan, which has become an unpleasant custom for the parents of females.

#Stopjahezkhori is a trend that has started on internet, coining a new term Jahezkhori to express their displeasure at the imprudent demand placed by the groom’s family.

As the wedding season is on, Pakistani actors including Ayesha Omar, Adnan Siddiqui, Iqra Aziz, Ushna Shah, Sana Javed, Yasir Hussain and many others took to their social media handles to say no to dowry.

I publicly pledge to never ask for dowry, and reduce a sacred union to some.. transaction. It's time our society and our mentality changes. The social burden, the violence, the deaths will end only when jahezkhor becomes a gaali. As it should. Join me. Make the pledge. #StopJahezkhori #UNWomenPakistan

Dowry is denied vehemently but it’s a practice that is still prevalent in today’s society. It’s like a continuous fire that has engulfed the lives of so many women and families across the globe and continues to do so. Women are making waves in every field then why are they still crushed to this day in the name of dowry? It’s important to educate today’s youth and curb this practice. Let’s fight for this cause and take a pledge that we will say no to dowry. #stopjahezkhori ✋
