Indonesia posts 6.5pc GDP growth in 2011

"Indonesia's economy grew 6.5 percent year-on-year compared to 2010," Central Statistics Agency spokesman Suryamin said.

The results, which are the latest in a string of positive economic news for Southeast Asia's biggest economy, come amid government forecasts for a 6.7 percent economic expansion this year.

Indonesia, which has a population of 240 million people, has seen its economy expand steadily in recent years, posting 6.5 percent growth in the fourth quarter last year, and 6.1 percent annual growth in 2010.
