The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 9.30 points (0.07 percent) to 12,707.16 in closing trade.

The broad S&P 500 added 1.52 points (0.11 percent) to 1,325.61, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 11.41 points (0.40 percent) to 2,859.68.

"The afternoon pullback comes amid some mixed earnings reports and as Fed chairman Ben Bernanke sounded a cautious economic tone on Capitol Hill and held off on signaling more economic stimulus," Charles Schwab analysts said.
