Brazil rejects US hospital waste shipment

SAO PAULO: Brazil has sent back to the United States a shipment of 46 tons of hospital waste that was to be recycled in

The daily said customs officials in the port of Suape seized the two containers which contained sheets, gloves, masks, pajamas, towels and used syringes, which were to be recycled into pocket lining materials.

Officials said the shipment was illegal and would be sent back to South Carolina, where the Liberian-flagged Cap Irene took the shipment on board, according to the daily.

The report said the material was destined for the Brazilian company Santa Cruz, which was closed by Brazilian health authorities after an inspection and that the importers were being fined for violations.
