Costa Rican coffee exports rose by 35 percent in June compared with the same month last year to reach 166,495 60-kg bags, according to preliminary data from national coffee institute ICAFE released on Monday.

Shipments during the first nine months of the current 2017/2018 harvesting season totaled 981,978 bags, up 10 percent compared with the same nine-month period during the previous 2016/2017 season.

Costa Rica, one of the region's smaller producers but known for its high-quality beans, exported 1.11 million bags during the 2016/2017 cycle.

The coffee season in Central America and Mexico, which together produce about a fifth of the world's arabica beans, runs from October through September.
