After slipping into negative territory in early trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 31.86 points (0.26 percent) to 12,391.78 in closing trade. The S&P 500, a broader measure of the markets rose 2.77 points (0.22 percent) to 1,280.58. The tech-dominated Nasdaq Composite added 2.34 points (0.09 percent) to 2,676.56. Aluminum giant Alcoa is slated to be the first of the Dow's 30 blue-chip stocks to report quarterly earnings.
