"We had signed an agreement worth $ 89 million for promotion of education, teachers' training and improvement in standard of education in the province," he said during a meeting attended by USAID and provincial education department officials at NJV School. The education secretary said under the agreement 330 model and secondary schools were to be established in 11 districts of Sindh coupled with improvement in professional skills of teachers and provision of better education environment for the students. Siddiq Memon said the assistance provided by USAID has till date helped training of 2563 teachers in the subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. "One hundred and twenty six master trainers have been prepared followed by training of 117 teachers and 31 school heads trained in information technology," he said. The teachers trained under the ongoing program, he said also included 170 provided with training in proper application of science kits. Another 261 teachers along-with 93 district education officers were imparted administrative and leadership training. "Seven of the outstanding teachers were also sent to USA for required training in collaboration with pilot and bureau of curriculum," said Memon. He said further, USAID assistance helped establishment of 274 science clubs in different schools while already existing science clubs in identified schools of 11 districts were also upgraded. Sindh secretary for education said mobile computer labs were also developed under the agreement signed with USAID and this had enhanced computer application skills among 96% of the concerned students and 90 percent of their teachers. He said 38 students were sent to the US for an orientation program. USAID representative, Aalia Shahid said the agency had achieved most of its targets, perceived under the agreement, and that remainder would soon be accomplished. The meeting was also attended by Chief of Program, Ijlal Haider, Project Advisor Rabia Maqsood, Liaqut Ali Shah of USAID and other senior officials of the provincial education department.
