KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday launched a Rs 418.6 million road rehabilitation project in Sohrab Goth, covering four major road schemes under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s 140-road development programme, as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and ease commuting difficulties in the area.
The foundation stone was laid for the rehabilitation of Maulana Obaidullah Sindhi Road, extending from Jamali Bridge on the Super Highway to Ayub Goth along the Lyari River, under Package 06 in Gulzar-e-Hijri, Scheme 33, Sohrab Goth Town.
The package includes rehabilitation of Mir Zaman Khan Road from Irfan Masood Road to Maymar Avenue Road, improvement of Maulana Obaidullah Sindhi Road, repair and patchwork on Maymar Avenue Road from the Super Highway to the Lyari River, and rehabilitation of Dr Nishat Malik Road in Gulshan Town through Zia-ul-Haq Colony.
According to the project briefing, asphalt carpeting will cover 596,200 square feet, while 111,600 square feet will be paved with blocks. The scheme also includes laying 5,464 running feet of 24-inch and 12-inch sewerage pipelines and installing 10,800 running feet of kerbstones.
Speaking at the ceremony, Wahab said Sohrab Goth had remained neglected in terms of development since the establishment of Pakistan, leaving several roads in extremely poor condition. He said the project was part of the government’s commitment to providing basic facilities to residents across Karachi without discrimination.
He said KMC planned to undertake development works worth approximately Rs68 billion across the city this year, with the mayor, deputy mayor, town chairmen and union committee chairmen working together to complete ongoing schemes. He expressed the hope that development projects would reach completion by June, when the current local government term is scheduled to end.
The mayor also announced that approval had been granted for a water connection to address shortages in Sohrab Goth, with the connection expected to be provided within two days.
On the area’s traffic problems, Wahab said the proposed Sohrab Goth Flyover had received approval in principle and was undergoing a technical feasibility study. The flyover is proposed to extend towards Abul Hasan Isphani Road, with the possibility of executing the project through the Frontier Works Organisation.
He also said suitable land would be identified to establish a healthcare facility for residents of Sohrab Goth, Safoora and Gulshan-e-Maymar, providing access to basic and emergency medical services.
Emphasising the need for coordinated development, the mayor urged the federal government to provide additional financial support to Karachi, saying the city made a significant contribution to the national economy. He added that KMC would continue using its available resources despite financial constraints.
Wahab stressed that transparency and construction quality must be ensured in all development schemes, with project expenditures and details of work properly documented. He said the administration would assess the performance of elected representatives in June against their commitments to citizens.
Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, KMC City Council Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, Sohrab Goth Town Chairman Lala Abdul Rahim, union committee chairmen and other local representatives attended the ceremony.
Later, the mayor inaugurated a family park in Quetta Town, Sohrab Goth, saying the facility fulfilled a longstanding demand of residents and would provide families with better recreational opportunities.
