Govt plans to abolish PL in next budget

Published Updated

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal announced the formation of a joint six-member committee comprising representatives of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and the government to consider the party’s recommendations for abolishing the petroleum levy (PL) in the next national budget.

The minister was addressing a press conference following a meeting between JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The JI chief said his party would march to Islamabad in mid-November to protest against the petroleum levy if the government failed to announce substantial relief.

Both sides agreed to form a committee comprising three JI members and three government representatives, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, the prime minister’s political adviser Rana Sanaullah, and Ahsan Iqbal himself, the minister added.

The minister also noted that approximately 12.5 million citizens across the country were currently benefiting from the Prime Minister Fuel Relief Scheme.
