ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Tuesday demanded the immediate restoration of meetings with party’s founding chairman Imran Khan, saying restrictions on access to the jailed former prime minister had continued for 375 days.

Talking to reporters outside Parliament House, Gohar said Tuesday was a designated day for meetings with Khan and urged the authorities to allow party leaders and family members to see him.

Describing the continued restrictions as inhuman, he said regular meetings with the former prime minister could help ease political tensions and improve the overall political situation.

Instead, he said, the denial of access had compounded political uncertainty, while tensions between the government and opposition continued to rise.

Gohar also accused political opponents of exploiting the situation arising from the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

He said the developments were discussed at a joint meeting of the party’s parliamentary committee, attended by its senators and members of the National Assembly, which condemned the restrictions on meetings with Imran Khan.

Calling for renewed engagement between the government and opposition, the PTI chairman said political disputes could only be resolved through negotiations and urged the government to initiate meaningful talks without further delay.

Gohar once again accused the federal government of using the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in KP to target the PTI politically.

He said the party opposed both measures but supported efforts to eliminate terrorism, arguing that security concerns should not be used to justify action against the provincial leadership.

The PTI chairman also criticised the extension of the detention of Imran Khan’s sisters for another 30 days. Describing Aleema Khan as a non-political figure, he questioned the decision to extend her detention.

Gohar further claimed that 12 PTI members of the National Assembly along with several MPAs were being held and that the party did not know the whereabouts of its chief minister.
