ISLAMABAD: The Board of Directors (BoD) of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) may extend the term of Managing Director (MD) Amer Tufail until a new MD is appointed. Tufail is scheduled to retire in January 2027 upon completing his three-year tenure, sources said.
The SNGPL is looking for a recruitment agency (headhunter) to find a new MD/CEO. Interested firms must submit two sealed envelopes—one with their technical proposal and one with their financial offer—by November 3, 2026.
Under the prevailing legal framework and the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Act, 2023, the authority to appoint MDs and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of public-sector companies like SNGPL rests with the BD and it does not require to seek any approval from the federal cabinet.
The government is advancing plans to unbundle state-owned gas utilities (SNGPL and SSGCL) into separate transmission and distribution companies. As part of broader energy sector reforms, a financial settlement mechanism is being implemented to clear Rs 3.6 trillion in accumulated gas circular debt.
The roadmap for gas sector transformation, developed by the petroleum division with technical support from the World Bank, proposes restructuring and unbundling of Sui companies by separating transmission, distribution and energy businesses while creating opportunities for private sector participation.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the World Bank visited SNGPL office in Lahore.
The SNGPL’s company related circular debt has accumulated to an estimated Rs 545 billion, driven by unmet revenue requirements from previous years and delayed consumer price hikes.
Tufail, who is a chartered accountant, has been part of SNGPL for the last 20 years, holding various key management positions. Prior to joining the SNGPL, he remained associated with large national and multinational organizations in Pakistan and abroad, featuring over 32 years of experience.
