HYDERABAD: Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam, plans to introduce drone technology training for agricultural engineering graduates in collaboration with the Al-Karam Group, aiming to equip young professionals with practical skills in precision agriculture, digital farming and emerging agricultural technologies.
Announcing the initiative at the inaugural session of a two-day workshop on tractor operation and maintenance, Vice Chancellor Engr Prof Dr Altaf Ali Siyal said the global agricultural sector was rapidly shifting towards mechanization, robotics and technology-driven farming, making technical expertise and hands-on training indispensable for future agricultural development.
“Without embracing modern technology, agricultural development will remain a distant dream,” he said, emphasizing that agricultural engineer must be equipped with the skills required to meet the evolving demands of the farming sector.
Prof Siyal said the university also planned to introduce tractor operation and drone training for female students, enabling them to develop practical competencies and access emerging career opportunities. He identified Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and drone technology as increasingly important tools for improving agricultural productivity, resource management and precision farming.
The Vice Chancellor observed that academic degrees alone were no longer sufficient to secure professional opportunities, as employers’ increasingly valued practical expertise and specialized skills. He stressed the need to recognize agricultural engineering qualifications in relevant public- and private-sector organizations and ensure that graduates received fair opportunities in recruitment and competitive examinations.
The workshop was organized by SAU’s Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology to strengthen practical skills in farm mechanization, tractor operation, and machinery maintenance and workplace safety.
Dean of the Faculty Prof Dr Muneer Ahmed Mangrio said the present era belonged to practical learning, experimentation and innovation. He urged students to develop hands-on expertise in engine mechanics, machinery maintenance and field operations, adding that practical competence was essential for professional success. He also acknowledged the contributions of Engr Mansoor Rizvi towards promoting agricultural engineering and technical training in Pakistan.
