Punjab mulls power supply plan for Sundar Industrial Estate
LAHORE: The Punjab government is examining a proposed power supply arrangement for Sundar Industrial Estate and the Orange Line Metro Train to improve energy efficiency and explore cost-effective electricity solutions for industry and public transport.
The proposal came under discussion at a meeting chaired by Provincial Minister for Energy Faisal Ayub Khokhar on Wednesday where officials reviewed a project under the Competitive Trading Bilateral Contract Market (CTBCM) framework.
Energy Secretary Ajmal Bhatti and representatives of various companies attended the meeting.
The officials briefed the provincial minister on the proposed project, including its potential benefits and possible electricity transmission arrangements. The meeting also reviewed options for meeting the electricity requirements of Sundar Industrial Estate and the Orange Line Metro Train by making effective use of available power generation resources.
During the briefing, officials said Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power Bahawalpur had a power generation capacity of 1,300 megawatts, while a 400MW project spread over 15,000 acres was also under development. The meeting discussed possibilities for utilising these resources more effectively and improving the electricity supply system.
The minister appreciated the proposals for modern and practical energy solutions and directed the relevant authorities to prepare a comprehensive presentation covering the project’s technical, financial and administrative aspects to assess its feasibility and potential benefits.
He said providing affordable, quality and reliable electricity to consumers and the industrial sector was among the government’s top priorities. Uninterrupted power supply at competitive rates was essential for industrial growth, business expansion and economic stability, he added.
The minister stressed the need for modern technology, effective planning and workable proposals to address the energy requirements of industrial units. He said projects aimed at improving the power supply system should also offer efficient and sustainable solutions for industry. Faisal emphasised that better planning and effective utilisation of available resources could provide greater relief to consumers and businesses. He called for stronger coordination among relevant government departments, energy companies and the private sector to achieve these objectives.
