KARACHI: The Sindh government has directed officials to accelerate construction of the Yellow and Red Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines and finalise new routes for double-decker and electric buses expected to arrive next month, as part of efforts to improve Karachi’s public transport network.

The directives were issued by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon - who holds portfolios of Information, Transport and Mass Transit - at a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department on Tuesday.

The meeting reviewed progress on ongoing transport projects, including construction of the Yellow and Red lines, integration of BRT corridors and preparations for deploying the new buses.

Emphasising the need for an integrated public transport system, Memon said connecting the Orange, Green, Red and Yellow lines was essential to enable commuters to travel conveniently between different parts of the city.

“Building BRT lines alone is not enough; effective connectivity between them is equally important,” he said.

He directed officials to ensure better coordination among the various corridors to facilitate commuters and improve the overall efficiency of public transport.

The Minister also ordered faster construction of bridges and other infrastructure along the BRT corridors, with particular emphasis on the second section of the Taj Haider Bridge and the construction of depots for the Yellow Line.

Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, TransKarachi Chief Executive Officer Zubair Channa, Yellow Line Project Director Kamal Dayo, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Behzad Memon and other officials attended the meeting and briefed the Senior Minister on project progress.

Sharjeel Memon said the provincial government would continue expanding the public transport network and improving connectivity to provide Karachi residents with a modern, efficient and integrated transport system.
