Chinese investors eye EVs, tourism sectors in Punjab
LAHORE: A 20-member delegation of Chinese investors called on Punjab Minister for Industries and commerce Chaudhry Shafay Hussain on Friday and expressed keen interest in establishing electric bus and truck manufacturing plants, investing in information technology and tourism, and setting up a China pavilion in the province to showcase Chinese products.
The delegation, comprising representatives of Chinese companies in electric vehicles (EVs), IT, tourism and agriculture, discussed investment opportunities across various sectors of the province.
Director of the forum’s Beijing office, Wei Linzhui, said the forum planned to establish a China pavilion on 100 kanals of land in Punjab. Chinese investors were also considering electric bus and truck assembly and manufacturing plants, while an IT university in Gujrat was under consideration.
Shafay Hussain said several Chinese companies had invested millions of dollars in Punjab over the past two and a half years. He added that chip frame manufacturing would begin in Pakistan for the first time, while the construction of a Chinese mobile phone company VIVO’s factory at Faisalabad Industrial Estate was nearing completion.
He invited Chinese companies to explore opportunities in EV charging infrastructure, IT and tourism, assuring them that the provincial government would provide land for the proposed China Pavilion.
The minister said Punjab’s special economic zones offered modern industrial infrastructure, adding that plot prices in industrial estates had been reduced to facilitate investors.
A 50-acre expo centre would also be established in Faisalabad, with construction expected to begin by the end of this year. The minister stated that Chinese investment could accelerate technology transfer and industrial development in Pakistan, while stressing the need for practical measures to promote tourism between the two countries. Former Senator Lieutenant General Abdul Qayyum (r) also attended the meeting.
