Ghani calls for end to ethnic politics

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Labour, Human Resources and Social Protection Saeed Ghani has said ethnic and prejudicial politics since the 1980s have undermined Karachi’s progress, leading to violence and bloodshed in the name of language and ethnicity.

Addressing a ceremony in Korangi on Sunday, where a large number of Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) office-bearers and workers joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Saeed Ghani said his party believed in national politics and opposed divisions based on language, ethnicity, religion or sect.

The new entrants, led by PML-F District Korangi Information Secretary Engineer Malik Shah Zain and Additional General Secretary Abdul Rahman Jami, included workers from several provincial assembly constituencies.

Saeed Ghani said the PPP had strengthened its position in Karachi as workers from various political parties joined its ranks. He said the party had secured the Karachi mayor’s office, the largest number of town chairmanships and more than 100 union councils in the megacity.

He said the PPP represented all linguistic, ethnic and religious communities and described hatred and divisive politics as Karachi’s biggest problem, alongside persistent challenges involving water, sewerage, gas and electricity.

Malik Shah Zain, Rauf Ahmed Nagori and Korangi Town Chairman Muhammad Naeem Sheikh also spoke.
