ISLAMABAD: Incidents of robbery, dacoity and car lifting have surged in the federal capital, with 51 cases of various crimes registered at different police stations during the past week.

According to data collected by Business Recorder, the 51 reported incidents included 25 vehicle theft cases, 14 robberies, 11 street crimes, including the snatching of mobile phones and cash at gunpoint, one murder and one suicide.

During the past week, criminal gangs were most active within the jurisdictions of the Industrial Area, Sumbal, Khanna, Shehzad Town, Koral and Tarnol police stations. The 25 vehicle theft cases included one car and 24 motorcycles.

The most shocking incident during this period was the alleged suicide by a 20-year-old female student of the International Islamic University, identified as Laiba Ijaz, after she was allegedly defrauded of Rs5 million by a travel agent.

According to police and family sources, the deceased left her house at around 2pm on October 9 but did not return. Her family began searching for her and later discovered her body hanging from a tree in Sector G-10.

In another incident, a suspected robber was killed and a policeman injured during an encounter in the capital, while another suspect managed to escape from the scene.

During the past week, the Industrial Area police station registered five vehicle theft cases and one street crime case, while the Sumbal police station registered two robbery cases, two vehicle theft cases and one street crime case.

Similarly, the Koral police station registered two vehicle theft cases and one case each of robbery and dacoity, while the Shehzad Town police station registered two robbery cases and two vehicle theft cases.

The Tarnol police station registered one case each of dacoity, street crime and vehicle theft, while the Margalla police station reported two robbery cases.
