Interview with Liu Xueliang, Vice President of BYD Co., Ltd. and General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division
Liu Xueliang is Vice President of BYD Co., Ltd., and General Manager of BYD’s Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division. He has been associated with BYD for over two decades, playing a key role in expanding the company’s presence across Asia Pacific markets.
He joined BYD in 2004 to establish and lead its operations in Japan, serving as President of BYD Japan until 2012 and overseeing the development of the company’s IT business in the Japanese market.
In October 2012, he took charge of BYD’s Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, leading the introduction of electric buses in several markets, including Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea.
Since 2022, he has been closely involved in expanding BYD’s passenger vehicle business across the region, with the company establishing a presence in 26 countries and regions in Asia Pacific.
He was appointed Vice President of BYD Co., Ltd. in April 2026. Following are the edited excerpts of his recent conversation with BR Research:
BR Research: BYD has achieved remarkable success globally and is now one of the world’s leading NEV manufacturers. What has been the key driver behind this success?
Liu Xueliang: BYD began its journey in 1994 with the development and production of rechargeable batteries. Over the past three decades, our guiding philosophy has remained the same: we are a technology company first and innovation is at the core of everything we do.
From the very beginning, we have focused on using technology to benefit society and drive sustainable development through continuous innovation. We see it not only as our business strategy but also as our social responsibility.
Many years ago, BYD introduced its vision of three green dreams, solar energy, energy storage, and electric vehicles. Today, these have become real priorities for countries around the world, including Pakistan. Through technological innovation, we hope to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
BRR: How do you see the global automotive market evolving over the next decade, and what role will new energy vehicles (NEVs) play in shaping the future of mobility?
LX: New energy vehicles represent a fundamental transformation of the automotive industry, driven by rapid technological advancement.
Today, NEVs are being adopted at an unprecedented pace across the world. In China, the world’s largest automotive market, more than 60% of new vehicle sales now come from NEVs. As battery technology continues to improve, the transition towards electric mobility is expected to accelerate further.
We hope countries such as Pakistan will also embrace this transformation and become part of the global shift towards more sustainable transportation.
BRR: Pakistan is one of BYD’s newest markets. What makes Pakistan attractive for BYD, and how ready do you believe the country is for electric mobility?
LX: BYD entered Pakistan in 2024 and delivered its first new energy vehicles in February 2025. In less than 18 months, we have delivered more than 10,000 vehicles. This reflects the growing confidence of Pakistani customers in new energy mobility.
Pakistan is also among the leading countries in the adoption of solar energy while remaining heavily dependent on imported oil. These factors make the transition to new energy vehicles both necessary and achievable.
As a responsible global company, BYD is committed to bringing advanced technologies and high-quality products to Pakistan, and we are confident about the country’s future in electric mobility.
BRR: BYD is planning a manufacturing plant in Pakistan. What does this investment signify, and how will the facility meet BYD’s global manufacturing standards?
LX: First of all, we would like to thank our local partner, Mega Motor Company (MMC), for its commitment to building BYD’s local manufacturing capabilities in Pakistan. MMC is the first local partner to establish a dedicated NEV assembly facility in the country, marking an important milestone in our long-term commitment to Pakistan. Together, we are advancing local production, with the project nearing its launch in the second half of 2026.
This is BYD’s sixth facility outside of China and has a production capacity of 25,000 units per annum, scalable to 50,000 units per annum.
More details about the project will be shared in due course, but our vision extends beyond introducing vehicles. BYD aims to contribute to Pakistan’s green transition by supporting the development of a sustainable mobility ecosystem.
This plant is expected to generate more than 1,100 jobs, advance sustainable industrialisation, and help avoid an estimated 165,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2034.
We are committed to supporting Pakistan with our technology and expertise as the country builds its green economy, while working closely with local partners to develop capabilities across the automotive value chain.
BRR:BYD recently introduced its next-generation ultra-fast charging technology. How will this innovation shape the future of electric mobility, and could Pakistan benefit from it?
LX: BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery powers our Mega Flash Charging technology. Its biggest advantage is that it significantly reduces charging time, making electric vehicles far more practical for everyday use while accelerating the adoption of new energy vehicles.
We are currently discussing with our local partner, Mega Motor Company, how this technology could eventually be introduced to serve Pakistani customers. The latest charging technology is designed for next-generation vehicles equipped with the new battery platform. Existing BYD vehicles will continue to be compatible with the charging infrastructure, although charging speeds will vary.
The introduction of this technology in Pakistan will depend on infrastructure readiness, discussions with the relevant stakeholders, and future product planning.
BRR: Innovation has always been central to BYD’s philosophy. What technologies or breakthroughs do you believe will define the next generation of vehicles?
LX: BYD is, first and foremost, a technology company, and we continue to introduce new innovations every year.
Whether every innovation proves revolutionary is difficult to predict, but we remain committed to investing heavily in research and development. We have over 100,000 engineers working on R&D across the globe.
We will continue advancing technology step by step, using innovation to deliver better products and a better ownership experience for customers around the world.Just a few years ago, charging an electric vehicle in around 10 minutes seemed impossible. Today, it has become a reality.
BRR: What is BYD’s long-term vision for Pakistan?
LX: Our long-term vision is to contribute to Pakistan’s green economy by supporting the country’s transition towards sustainable transportation and clean energy solutions.
As we build local manufacturing capabilities, we also see an opportunity for Pakistan to develop into a regional manufacturing and export base for new energy vehicles. With a consistent and long-term policy framework in place, this could support industrial development, create opportunities across the local value chain, and contribute to Pakistan’s broader export ambitions.
We are committed to bringing advanced technologies, investing for the long term, and working closely with Mega Motor Company to build a sustainable mobility ecosystem in Pakistan.
BRR: There are many Chinese automotive brands operating in Pakistan. What makes BYD different from the others?
LX: We do not see BYD as simply a car manufacturer, we see ourselves as a technology company driving industrial development and contributing to the future of mobility.
Our goal is to develop products that meet the needs of a wide range of customers and, ultimately, make their lives better. We want every customer to be able to find a vehicle within the BYD portfolio that best suits their needs, whether they are looking for efficiency, performance, technology, comfort, or versatility.
At the same time, we remain committed to continuous innovation; bringing advanced, best-in-class technology to our products and creating experiences that meet the expectations of customers around the world.
