ISLAMABAD: A special committee constituted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to reform the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has begun its work.
The committee was formed following the tragic fire incident at the Children’s Nursery at PIMS, which claimed the lives of 15 infants.
The first meeting of the committee was held here on Wednesday and was attended by Federal Minister for Health Services Mustafa Kamal, Law Minister AzamNazeerTarar, Establishment Secretary Barrister Nabeel Awan, Additional Attorney General Chaudhry AamirRehman, and Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Syed Tariq Rafi.
Additional Health Secretary Laeeq Ahmed, Executive Director, PIMS Maj Gen (R) DrAzhar Mahmood Kayani, and other senior officials of the hospital attended the meeting.
The participants held detailed discussions on administrative and governance reforms and considered proposals to improve PIMS’s administrative, medical and governance systems.
The participants reviewed various aspects of healthcare services, including the quality of care, patient safety, medical facilities and infrastructure development.
The committee also conducted a comprehensive review of PIMS’s existing clinical and administrative performance, management gaps, governance issues, and institutional matters.
Recommendations were put forward for sustainable restructuring, an effective administrative setup and the creation of an autonomous and transparent governance framework.
The reform committee agreed to establish a viable system backed by a clear legal foundation, defining the specific laws, rules and legal authority under which the proposed changes would be implemented.
