Section 144 imposed across Punjab in view of security threats
LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province until October 15, citing serious threats to public peace and security and the safety of life and property.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab home department, a complete ban has been imposed on assemblies, processions and gatherings of five or more persons at public places, roads and open spaces. The carrying and display of all kinds of weapons at public places has also been prohibited. The notification also bars individuals from inciting or encouraging people to participate in unlawful assemblies.
However, the restrictions will not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship. Courts, government institutions and duly authorised events have also been exempted.
Similarly, personnel of law enforcement, intelligence and security agencies will remain exempt from the restrictions while performing their official duties. The home department said law enforcement and intelligence agencies had received alerts regarding imminent security threats. Intelligence reports indicated that terrorist organisations were planning to target public gatherings, making assemblies, rallies, public meetings, sit-ins, processions and demonstrations potential targets.
The department said law enforcement agencies had requested immediate preventive measures to counter the potential threat of terrorism and ensure effective maintenance of law and order. In view of the security concerns, the secretary home imposed the restrictions under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, with immediate effect. The home department said protection of the lives and property of the public remained the foremost priority of the Punjab government.
