LAHORE: Punjab University’s (PU) spokesperson on Monday rejected allegations by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), accusing some of its leading members of using pressure tactics to stall inquiries against themselves and block action over alleged billion-rupee corruption in Town-III.
Speaking at an emergency press conference, the spokesperson said appointments, administrative matters and other complaints involving prominent JAC members, including alleged personal use of university premises, were being examined under the law and university rules.
He stressed that accountability proceedings would not be stopped by protests, and that the administration would neither retaliate nor yield to pressure.
Defending the university’s finances, he said income had risen from about Rs7 billion to Rs12.5 billion in two years, while the budget deficit fell from Rs2.86 billion to Rs1.6 billion. He added that about 5 million units of electricity had been saved, and that admissions topped 15,000 for the first time, an increase of over 40 percent.
All financial decisions, he said, were approved by statutory bodies including the Syndicate and the Finance and Planning Committee.
