PA speaker for strengthening political dialogue

Published Updated

LAHORE: Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan has stressed the need for strengthening political dialogue, constitutional supremacy and the rule of law to address national challenges, ensure democratic stability and improve governance.

Addressing a conference organised by a private university in Lahore, he said political differences should not close the door to consultation and dialogue. State institutions should perform their responsibilities within their respective constitutional domains, while national affairs should be pursued through constitutional and parliamentary mechanisms.

He said local governments should be given appropriate powers and responsibilities to make elected representation more effective and improve public service delivery.

The speaker said transparency, accountability and an efficient administrative system were essential for good governance. Institutional capacity should be enhanced through reforms to improve the delivery of public services.

Malik said Parliament was an important forum for debate, consultation and legislation on national issues, adding that its constitutional authority and institutional balance must be respected. “Differences of opinion are part of a democratic system, however, these should be resolved through dialogue and constitutional procedures rather than confrontation,” he said.

He further said Pakistan faced complex political, economic and social challenges that required collective thinking and serious dialogue. He stressed the importance of constitutional principles, the rule of law and effective public representation for national security, peace and development.
