LAHORE: The Punjab government has introduced a new mechanism for sanitation fee collection in urban areas across Punjab.

In this connection, the Suthra Punjab Authority and the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department have signed a formal service-level agreement (SLA) for the collection of sanitation fees. Suthra Punjab Authority DG Umer Javed and Excise and Taxation DG Umar Sher Chattha signed the agreement on Wednesday. Additional DG Suthra Punjab Rizwanul Haq, Additional DG Excise Ahmed Saeed and other officers were also present at the meeting.

According to the agreement, the excise department will ensure collection of sanitation fees along with property tax during 2026-27. The department will also be responsible for door-to-door surveys, printing of sanitation bills and addressing complaints and corrections related to the bills. A uniform sanitation fee will be implemented in urban areas across Punjab. Residential properties up to five marlas will be charged Rs 300 per month, while houses measuring five to 10 marlas will be charged Rs 500. A monthly fee of Rs 1,000 will be collected from 10 to 20 marla houses, Rs 2,000 from 20 to 40 marla houses and Rs 5,000 from houses larger than 40 marlas. Small commercial units will be charged Rs 500 per month, medium-sized commercial units Rs 1,000 and large commercial units Rs 3,000.

The excise and taxation department will receive a 1 percent service charge for collecting the sanitation fee. The decision to collect sanitation fees through the excise department was taken at the 36th meeting of the Provincial Cabinet Committee held in August.
