ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has called for the immediate release of Aleema Khan, sister of party founder Imran Khan, following her arrest in Lahore, while stressing that his party wants to avoid confrontation and violence.
Talking to the media on Sunday, Barrister Gohar said Noreen Niazi had informed him by phone about Aleema Khan’s arrest. He said PTI had always made it clear that its march would be peaceful and political, while the party’s objective was to pursue its constitutional and political demands through peaceful struggle.
Barrister Gohar said PTI did not want any kind of confrontation or violence, adding that arresting or detaining Aleema Khan amounted, in his view, to fuelling violence and tensions. Strongly condemning her arrest, the PTI chairman described it as the first step towards worsening the situation.
Barrister Gohar demanded that all such measures be stopped immediately and that Aleema Khan be released without delay. He said the party would soon announce its future course of action against such measures.
He reiterated PTI’s position that the September 27 march would remain a peaceful political activity. He said the party planned to pursue its constitutional and political demands through non-violent means.
Aleema Khan was detained in Lahore on Sunday amid preparations for PTI’s planned September 27 march. Reports said she was detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law and subsequently shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
