Petroleum prices: Traders concerned at frequent increases
KARACHI: Traders on Friday expressed deep concern over frequent increases in petroleum prices and their effect on inflation, urging the federal government to immediately control fuel rates.
In a statement, spokesperson for the All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran and All City Traders Ittehad Muhammad Ismail Lalpuriya said the sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices in recent days had forced transporters to raise fares sharply.
He said higher fares had also caused the prices of daily-use food items to go up, putting more pressure on consumers. Lalpuriya said the government was using higher international market prices as a reason for raising fuel rates, but was not ready to reduce the levy charged on every litre of petroleum products.
He called on the federal government to end the petroleum levy and lower fuel prices. He also urged the government to take action against those raising transport fares and food prices by using fuel costs as a pretext.
